The City of Milford Public Works Department will be completing water line flushing of the City’s water system during the month of May. Routine water line flushing is necessary to remove the build-up of scale, rust and silt from the water line which can cause customers to experience discolored water.
Public Works staff will complete the flushing by wards between the hours of 10:00 pm and 7:00 am on Mondays and Tuesdays each week in May, weather permitting. In the advent of adverse weather or other emergency situations that may arise, the flushing may occur later in the same week.
Flushing will be conducted as follows:
Week of May 1 – Ward 3 – All areas north of SE Third Street and east of N Walnut Street, including the downtown.
Week of May 8 – Ward 4 – All areas west of N Walnut Street and north of NW Front Street) as well as all areas north of Haven Lake and Griffith Lake.
Week of May 15 – Ward 1 – All areas south of SE Third Street and east of N/S Washington Street and north of Shawnee Country Club (excluding the developments of Hearthstone, Orchard Hill, Meadows of Shawnee and Shawnee Acres).
Week of May 22 – Ward 2 – All areas south of NW Front Street and west of N/S Washington Street.
Residents who experience discolored water during the flushing program can alleviate the issue by running a single cold water faucet (preferably an outside faucet) for a few moments which in most cases clears the water in service line to the home. Additionally, we recommend residents not do laundry at the beginning of the day and wait until the water has cleared, as the particles may discolor clothing. Residents who inadvertently use discolored water in their washing machine can reverse the affects by rewashing and using Iron Out, Rover, or other similar products available at grocery and hardware stores.
During these time periods, residents are encouraged not to park across from or within fifteen (15) feet of fire hydrants to ensure the flushing can be completed as quickly and efficiently as possible. The Public Works Department will use the CodeRed emergency notification system, the City’s website, Facebook page and Twitter account to communicate the plans for waterline flushing. Residents who have not done so are encouraged to visit the City’s website to register for CodeRed and to follow us on Facebook and/or on Twitter.
