Engineering Department
The Engineering Department exists to plan and direct the efficient and economical development and construction of municipal public works. The City Engineer is a City Staff position and is director of the Engineering Department. Professional engineering advice and assistance are given to other department heads in connection with the planning or execution of public works improvement programs and projects. Supervision is exercised over staff and consultants involved in design and construction of public works and residential and commercial subdivisions. This department manages inspections services for water, sewer and road construction to assure materials and workmanship adhere to City standards. The Engineering Department also manages mapping and locating services including subsurface utility locating. Broad policies are prescribed by and general direction is received from the City Manager's office, which holds the City Engineer responsible for the effectiveness of the engineering services program.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- The city engineer performs all the duties of the city engineer as required by law, ordinance or resolution and maintains related records as required by statute and local ordinance.
- Initiates engineering studies or program review in response to inquiries from City Council, City management, or when professional judgment suggests it is advisable to do so;
- Makes the final selection of engineering and architectural consultants and contractors for recommendation to the City Council;
- Reviews and evaluates for propriety engineering plans, specifications, engineering reports, cost estimates, contract documents, and proposed ordinances submitted by City staff and consulting engineers.
- Selects, oversees, and evaluates adequacy of consulting engineering services; prepares requests for proposal; coordinates contract activities and provides technical advice and interpretation as required.
- Coordinates public works and engineering activities with other City Departments and with outside agencies.
- Designs and inspects construction of smaller Capital Improvement Projects.
- Maintains plans and specifications for all of the City's water, sewer, storm drainage facilities, streets, and buildings.
- Develops standards and specifications for construction to be accepted by the City.
